Clive Burrows is the Group Engineering Director for FirstGroup, responsible for all Engineering activities throughout this international transport business.

Clive has extensive experience in developing, testing, commissioning and maintaining rolling stock. He was Fleet Manager for InterCity before joining European Passenger Services in 1991 to establish the Engineering base for the Eurostar trains linking London, Paris and Brussels.

Clive joined FirstGroup in 1998 with responsibility for Engineering across the rail businesses, introducing several fleets of new trains and leading initiatives to improve safety and reliability. He has taken a leading industry role in developing solutions to railway safety and performance interface issues. Clive was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in recognition of his contribution to Engineering.

Between 2005 and 2008 Clive was Director of Technical and Professional at the DfT, where he led the team providing economic, statistical, modelling, safety, standards and technical advice to the Government. This included producing the Rail Technical Strategy. 

Clive returned to FirstGroup as Group Engineering Director on the Executive Management Board, with responsibility for the Group’s Engineering activities around the world.

Clive is Honorary Professor of Railway Engineering at the University of Nottingham.
